The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Rural Development in Ekiti State, Hon. Karounwi Oladapo has reinstated the position of the State government to clamp down on those who built in contravention of the Ekiti State Urban and Regional planning law 2011 and Ekiti State Building Regulation 2017 and their illegal structures.
The Commissioner said the State Government will not sit and wait till lives are lost to flooding before proactive measures are taken to avoid any unforeseen disaster in the State.
Karounwi said since his resumption in office, the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban development has been receiving complaints from the victims of flooding in the flood proned areas of Ado Ekiti which allegedly, is caused by illegal buildings built to obstruct the free flow of rivers in their areas with particular references to Afao road and Federal Housing areas.
“We have gotten the contacts of the complainants and the Ministry officials will inspect the sites as from Monday, 11 September, 2023 to assess the situation with a view to taking appropriate actions to correct the situation,”he said.
The Commissioner advised developers to bring their Building Plans for assessment and approval before erection of any Structure anywhere in Ekiti State, noting that it is criminal to build or erect any structures without an approved Building Plan and Development Permit.
He said further that erecting Structures in breach of what was approved carries grave consequences according to the law and nothing stops the Ministry from revoking any Building Plan Approval or Development Permit earlier granted in the interest of Public Safety which is overriding.
He however advised Developers to always respect the red flag “STOP WORK” when it is placed on any building until the contravention is resolved in line with the law.
