Residents of Ado Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, yesterday experienced the first rain of the year 9th day into the year 2024.

Unlike in the past when such incidents normally accomplished by strong winds or cloudy weather, the Tuesday’s night rain started abruptly some minutes after 9 pm and lasted for almost 40 minutes.

However, some adjoining towns like Ilawe, Iyin and Ikere did not enjoy the first rain of the year according to reports but major quarters in Ado metropolis experienced heavy rain such as Oke-ila, Adebayo, Falegan, Emirin, Oke-Ureje, Odo Ado, Ijigbo, Omisanjana among others.

Most residents many of whom were in bed at the time saw the august visitor as a soothing balm against the heat and scorching sun in daytime.

The impact of the rains, it was also learnt, varied with location, with light showers in some parts, and slightly heavy in others.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have greeted the early arrival of the first rain of the year.

A farmer, Mr Kunle Olorunfemi, who specialises in growing vegetables, pepper and fresh fruits, said it was a welcome development, as it would help him on his farm.

A housewife, Mrs Morenikeji James, expressed delight, saying it was a great relief and had reduced the hot weather, created by the dry season.

”I am indeed happy that the first rain of the year, fell without a storm and there was no report of any destruction of property.

”If you observed, the weather had been so hot and unfriendly for sometime now. I believe this rain will help create a relief,” she said.
