The Ekiti State-owned female football team, Ekiti Queens on Wednesday, gave a good account of themselves before a capacity crowd of enthusiastic soccer lovers at the mainbowl of Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in a maiden edition of the 2024/25 Women Soccer League as they beat the visiting Heartland Queens of Owerri by 1-0 in a thrilling opening encounter.
The crucial match was one of the matches decided across the country on Day 1 of the NWFL 2024/2025 holding simultaneously at different venues including Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
It was a day when football enthusiasts from the nooks and crannies of the state came out in large number to support the BAORESS Babes.
The game which lived to the expectations of spectators kept fans on the edge of their seats for the entire duration of the encounter as the home team delivered an impressive performance.
The decisive moment came in the second half when Olaleye Odunayo who came in as substitute scored the only goal, sealing the win for Ekiti Queens FC.
The yesterday’s strong start obviously sets a positive tone for Ekiti Queens to build on the momentum for the rest of the season.
In the next soccer encounter, the team will be visiting Ikenne in Ogun State to face Remo Stars Ladies for yet another tough engagement next week Wednesday 22nd January, 2025.
Meanwhile, ahead of the week 2 encounter, the coach, Jacob Vandy has assured of another impressive outing.
In separate interviews after Wednesday’s match, the Technical Advisor to Ekiti State Governor on Sports Development, Dr Olusola Osetoba and the Chairman Ekiti State Football Association, Aare Oluwole Oloworemo thanked the Governor for the support prior to the commencement of the league and also thanked the teeming football enthusiasts who can out enmasse to support the girls .
Also in attendance at the week 1 NWFL match were the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon Niyi Adebayo who represented the Governor, members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Committee on Sports led by it’s Chairman, Hon Idowu Odebunmi as well as several top political gladiators, Sports stakeholders both active and retired, Sports Associations and a massive supporters
In some other matches decided at other venues across the country on Wednesday January 15 in the NWFL 2024/2025 season opener, Bayelsa Queens pupped Delta Queens by a lone goal scored by Sefiat Idris while in Port Harcourt, Rivers Angels beat Ibom Angels 2-1 just as
Nasarawa Amazons pupped Dannaz Ladies by a lone goal in Lagos.
It was a one sided game in Benin where Edo Queens walloped Abia Angels 5 nil and Benue Queens were whitewashed at home by 1-5 against Robo Queens.
