ENVIRONMENTAL OFFENCES: COURT SENDS SCORES TO JAIL IN ADO-EKITI

A Mobile court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sent about forty persons to prison for violating environmental laws.

The persons were arrested during this month’s monthly sanitation exercise.

They were apprehended in Ado Ekiti metropolis and made to face trial before a magistrate Court sitting in Ado Ekiti.

In her ruling, magistrate Olubunmi Bamidele said the violators were guilty of the charges against them and consequently sentenced them to a month imprisonment with an option of five thousand Naira fine.
In a remark, the permernent secretary, Ministry of environment and Natural Resources, Mr Babatunde Aloko after monitoring the exercise said it would not be business as usual.

He said government would not relent in its effort at purnishing the offenders while sensitization through media would also be prioritize to promote sanitary compliance among the people.
The permanent Secretary said arrangements had been concluded to meet all local governments officials and market women on the need to always maintained hygenic environment to reduce the tendencies of outbreak of diseases.

In a remark, the General Manager, Waste management Agency, Mr Ayoola Osalusi who berated the attitude of residents of the state to waste disposal urged the people to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and by the road side.

In his contributions, the General Manager, State Environmental Protection Agency urged residents to continue to disilt their drains to avoid flooding most especially area that are water lodged
