The Ekiti assembly speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye says it has become imperative to immediately relocate the Iworoko Ekiti main market as a matter of overriding public interest.
Aribasoye who buttressed the resolution of the state assembly in the same direction noted that the safety of lives of citizens supersedes other considerations as constitutionally stipulated.
The house had resolved that the Ifedara Local Council Development Area leadership, where the town falls, commence immediate move to relocate the market following a recent tanker accident that claimed a life and injured others at the precarious location.
The market, positioned at a dangerous bend on the town’s main drive had experienced a number of accidents including one that claimed more than 20 lives 2019 after a trailer rammed into the market.
The Speaker recalled how he personally witnessed the 2019 incident and had to convey close to ten bodies with his personal vehicle to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
Following the latest accident, members of the Iworoko Ekiti community, through Hon. Hakeem Jamiu who represents their constituency, presented a petition to the house calling for the relocation of the market from the main road to another location to avert fatal incidents in future.
Rt. Hon. Aribasoye pointed out the risk of retaining such a market location in a town that hosts students of the state university adding that the state assembly will never trivialize any matter that borders on the welfare and security of the people.
The House directed the Chairman Ifedara Local Council Development Area, his Irepodun Local Government counterpart and other relevant authorities to immediately set machinery in motion to relocate the market.
