The Ekiti State House of Assembly has called on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to improve on its service delivery to the people of Ekiti State.
This charge was contained in a statement by the Chairman House Committee on Information and Value Orientation, Hon.Tunde Idowu representing Ikere Constituency 2 at a meeting with the Senior Officers of the Commission in the Ekiti State House of Assembly Complex Ado Ekiti.
The meeting was sequel to the motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House Hon.Tolu Ige during the last plenary of the House calling on lawmakers to have an interraction with the management of NIMC so that they can brief the house on the activities of the Commission and what they are doing to improve on its service delivery.
It would be recalled that the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Rt Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye has directed the Committee on Information and Value Orientation to have an interface with National Identity Management Commission and report to the House the outcome of the meeting in their subsequent plenary.
In an address, the Chairman House Committee on Information and Value Orientation, Hon. Tunde Idowu said he was not happy with the kind of reception given to the residents of Ekiti in the course of obtaining National Identity Number (NIN) in the centre adding that it was disheartening to see how people have been subjected to untold hardship which could endanger the lives of innocent citizens.
Hon. Tunde Idowu then called on the Commission to be diligent and prioritise
the welfare of the people.
His words; “Though you are a Federal Agency but House of Assembly as a lawmaking body, has the power to summon and Interrogate where and when necessary, we shall not shy away from our responsibility as responsible representatives of the people” he said.
Hon.Tolu Ige in his submission, narrated his ordeals at the centre while he was there to register for his National Identity Number lamenting how indigent citizens of the state have been neglected in the scorching sun with no attention from the Commission.
Other members of the Committee at the meeting were Alhaja Maryam Ogunlade, Hon.Yomi Ayorinde and Hon. Femi Akindele also shared their experiences with the Commission and called on them to proffer solutions to the hardship faced by residents at the Centre.
Responding to the posers raised by the Chairman and the Committee members, the State Coordinator of the Commission Mr T.T Ogundare who was respresented by the head of General Administration of the Commission, Mr Ibrahim Olutayo said the Commission acknowledged the constitutional roles of the Assembly and thanked them for their intervention and for creating time to identify some of the challenges confronting the Commission and the residents despite their tight schedules.
Mr Ibrahim said the problems facing the Commission was as a result of inadequate Office accommodation, lack of infrastructure, shortage of enrollment system among others, he assured the Committee that the Commission would work on the shortcomings as rightly identified by the House Committee on Information and Value Orientation.
