DRY SEASON FARMING: EKITI CLUSTER FARMERS APPEAL TO GOV BAO FOR ASSISTANCE

Worried by the hardship faced in the course of practicing irrigation farming owning to late arrival of rains, a group of farmers have sent an S.O.S to Governor Biodun Oyebanji to provide an enabling environment for their efforts to yield positive result in boosting food production.

The cluster farmers, about 20 of them expressed frustration at the manual system of wetting the soil which had left a substantial portion of the land uncultivated.

Speaking to our correspondent on Saturday at the farm site located along Irekanmi area off ilawe road Ado Ekiti, the state capital, the spokesperson of the farmers, Mr Olusola Adeleye said the lack of modern equipment of irrigation farming has hindered them from meeting their target and making effective use of the land.
According to him, “We have to appreciate the present administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his giant achievements in the area of agriculture through the office of Ministry of Agric and food Security and we are making this passionate appeal to the government to help in providing a borehole for us.
“We are more than 20 in this place even though we can do more than ten times we are doing here in production of vegetables, pepper, maize and yam , but we are seriously handicapped by the strenuous and cumbersome manual of wetting the crops thereby reducing our capacity to produce at the optimal level because this place is a vast area but largely under utilized”
The farmers expressed their frustration at the inclement weather which has dried up the land as it takes them extra efforts to dig deep into the ground for water using watering cans to wet the crops.
