At the plenary sitting of Thursday 15th February, 2024, the report of the House Committee on Investment, Trade and Industries on Ekiti State Asset Management Bill, 2024 was read by the chairman of the Committee, Hon. Tope Longe (Oye I).

Following the motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Tolu Ige (Ekiti SouthWest II), the report was adopted as a working document of the House. After thorough consideration of the report at the Committee of Whole House, the bill was read the third time and passed into law.

The report of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology on the screening of Commissioner Nominees to the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) was read by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Yemi Awoniyi (Moba II).

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker, you would recall the receipt of a letter from His Excellency, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji on Thursday 8th February, 2024, seeking for the confirmation of Dr. (Barr.) Adeoye Olukayode Joshua and Dr. (Mrs) Olufunke Fajobi as Commissioners in the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in line with Section 4 (c) of the SUBEB Law.”

“That having satisfied the Committee without element of doubt, the Committee hereby recommends to the House that the nomination of Dr. (Barr.) Adeoye Olukayode Joshua and Dr. (Mrs) Olufunke Fajobi as Commissioners in the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) be confirmed as requested by Mr. Governor.”

The report of Committee on Sustainable Development Goals & Due Process on the Screening of the Nominee for the post of Director General, Bureau of Public Procurement was read by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Femi Fatunla (Ikole I).

“Mr Speaker, based on our findings, having dutifully scrutinized the Nominee to establish his suitability for the job or otherwise, the Committee recommend that the House confirms the Nominee, Mr. James Babasola Folorunso for the position of Director General, Bureau of Public Procurement.”

The two reports were painstakingly considered at the Committee of the Whole House and subsequently, the three nominees were confirmed.

Earlier under matters of public urgent importance, Hon. Babatunde Oke (Ikere I) brought to the attention of the House two fire outbreaks in his constituency within a period of 1 week that led to destruction of two buildings and loss of valuable materials.

“Mr. Speaker, having recorded two fire outbreaks in my constituency within a period of 1 week, we should as a House act immediately in order to achieve a high fire safety status accross the State.”

“The House should invite the Director of Fire Service in the State and all heads of fire stations across the state for a dialogue and to ensure more awareness and sensitization activities that would prevent fire outbreaks.”

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, in his words advised the citizens to adhere to safety measures that would prevent fire outbreaks in the state. He thereafter directed the House Committee on Public Utilities and Infrastructure to take up the matter and report back to the House.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Tolu Ige, also brought to the attention of the House the agony of Ekiti people at the National Identity Management Commission (NICM) enrollment centers in the state.

“Currently, NIMC registration centers in our state are operating with only four computer systems to cater to the entire population.

This inadequate infrastructure has resulted in thousands of Ekiti State indigenes, both young and old, enduring excruciating hours of waiting in queues under the scorching sun.

The fact that there are no seats further increase the discomfort and poses health risks, particularly to the elderly and vulnerable individuals.

While we acknowledge that NIMC is a federal government agency, the plight of our people cannot be ignored.”

The House resolved to liase with the state coordinator of NIMC to remedy the ugly situation; the House would inform members of National Aseembly from Ekiti State for quick intervention from the Federal; the members of the House would donate part of their salaries to provide canopies and Chairs for immediate relief to the people.

The House adjourned plenary sitting to Thursday 22nd February, 2024
