The Ekiti State House of Assembly has condemn the arbitrary and indiscrimate erection of speed bumps on virtually all the State roads without proper regulation, called on relevant authorities to check the scourge.

The resolution followed the unanimous adoption of a Motion moved by Hon. Babatunde Oke, member representing Ikere (I) and seconded by Hon. Johnson Oyekola Bode-Adeoye Ekiti West I at the plenary on Monday.

The motion is titled: ‘The need to properly regulate erection of speed bumps on highways and other roads in Ekiti State”.

Moving the motion, Hon. Babatunde Oke said, “The House frowns at the arbitrary erection of unwarranted speeds bumps across the state and calls for caution”.

The lawmaker expressed concern on the way bumps were being erected by individuals and communities on roads across the state which he said constitutes danger to road users and residents of the host communities if unchecked.

His words: “Even though we are not oblivious of the reason for the erection of those speed breakers by the host communities to safeguard the lives of the vulnerable pedestrians, we urge the communities that when it became necessary to erect speed bump(s), to not only seek approval from relevant authorities but to also solicit professional counsel before embarking on the project”.

While commending the Federal Controllers of Works in the State for ownership in the deployment of road signage on Federal highways, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye calls on the Agency to improve on the road signages because they are so useful to commuters who travels on our highways on regular bases” he said.

Furthermore, the House urged the residents and relevant agencies of government to be vigilant and ensure that anyone engaging in arbitrary erection of speed bumps without approval should be reported and made to face the appropriate sanctions.

“The arbitrary erection of unwarranted speed bumps are common on our street roads and most particularly without conspicuous signage. The Chairmen of the 16 Local Government Councils and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) therefore, should collaborate with the media, NGOs, religious and community leaders and embark on sensitizing the people to shun arbitrary erection of speed bumps without approval”, he concluded.
