The Ekiti State contingent to the just concluded 2023 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State on Sunday arrived Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital at about 5pm.
Parents and guardians of the young Ekiti ambassadors who were eagerly awaiting their arrival at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium could not hide their joy when the team arrived .
The Team Ekiti who won 7 medals comprising 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals were however the happiest as the performances fell short of their own expectations having landed in Asaba with high hopes of surpassing the record set at the 2021 edition of the National Youth Games.
All the kids have now re-united with their parents and guardians while eagerly awaiting an official statement from the governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji on his government’s plans and packages for the athletes including those who won medals and those whose best were not enough to fetch Ekiti State medals.
The governor had showed remarkable commitment towards sports development by releasing the sum of 20 million naira for the team to prosecute the Youth Games Zonal elimination in Ibadan and the Youth Games in Asaba, hence Sports analysts and stakeholders are hoping the governor will still motivate and encourage the young boys and girls inspite of the issues that bedevilled the Team Ekiti opening ceremony.
Meanwhile, the host state, Delta has been declared winners of the Youth Games having won more gold medals than closest contenders, Lagos and other States.
Lagos State finished second while Edo State settled for the third position, followed b Bayelsa and Kwara State that came fourth and fifth.
Ogun State finished in the 6th place while Oyo state ended in the 12th position just as Ondo secured the 16th place, Osun came 17th ahead of Ekiti State that occupied the 18th position.
While some states won as low as just 2 medals, Venue state did not win a single medal after 8 days of keep competition.
In the meantime, two of the youngsters who won medals for Ekiti State namely Abdulrahman Mustapha and Abdulrahman Fatai will today (Monday) be treated to a special reception at the Ekiti Golf Club in Ado.
According to the captain of the golf club, Dr Ayodele Seluwa, the reception will coincide with the 2023 Independence Day Golf Kitty holding at the golf club.
The golf club captain said the golf family was delighted with the performances of the two siblings at the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
He said the executive and members of the golf club will celebrate the boys in a special way in a bid to encourage more budding talents in Ekiti State to consider playing the game of golf.
Dr Seluwa assured that beautiful goodies await the youngsters for doing Ekiti State proud adding that the gold medals won by the young golfers boosted the position of Team Ekiti on the eventual final medals table.
Out of the 100 boys and girls that represented Ekiti State, all the 7 medals won by Team Ekiti were won by 2 boys, a girl and a baseball team as indicated below
