One of the defining signposts of Ekiti as Nigeria’s leading tourism State will be on display on Easter Monday, April 5, 2026 at the 8th edition of Hike Ekiti Mountain Safari under the auspices of Discover Ekiti and in full collaboration with the Bureau of Tourism Development Ekiti State.

For a state richly blessed by exponential tourism sites and monuments, attention will this year, be shifted to Ikere Ekiti as tourists, fun seekers and people from all walks of life will explore the natural endowment and scenic beauty of Ugele–Iho-Oloko Cave.

The ‘mystery cave’ and one of the world’s amazing phenomenon is located by the hills of Oke-Ikere in the ancient town of Ikere-Ekiti comprising a remarkable blend of natural beauty and ancient history.

Surrounded by lush vegetation and granite rock formations, the cave features multiple chambers connected by a long corridor, offering a unique and adventurous exploration experience.

An oral tradition preserved by High Chief Lawrence Awe, the *Olotin of Oke-Ikere Ekiti and traditional custodian of The Cave stated this;

,“The cave was once inhabited by early settlers—hunters who migrated from *Ile-Ife over 500 years ago. They lived in the cave and used it as a refuge during times of war because of its hidden, secure structure. The cave also derives its name from “Oloko,” a hyena believed to have once lived within the shelter”

Scientific research has further established the site’s historical importance. Archaeological research led by Prof. Raphael Ajayi Alabi, Former HOD of the Archeology Department at the University of Ibadan which uncovered pottery fragments, stone tools, and metal objects, indicating long-term human activity.

Also, a radiocarbon date of 620±60 years Before Present (around A.D. 1310) confirms that the cave was occupied during the *Late Stone Ago with continued use in later periods.

Today, the cave is emerging as a key eco-tourism destination in Ekiti State. It is being showcased during the 8th Edition of Hike Ekiti Mountain Safari organised by Discover Ekiti Tourism Club in strategic collaboration with the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development (Office of the Governor).
