BREAKING: EKITI SHINES AS ABAYOMI ADELEYE WINS FIRST MEDAL AT GATEWAY GAMES

Ekiti State on Sunday, began the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games, on a brighter note by winning the first medal in the national sports mundia by Abayomi Adeleye.

Adeleye registered Ekiti on the medals table winning a Bronze in the 55kg category after beating ten out of the thirteen contestans in the category to clinch the Bronze medal.

He was successful at the first attempt in the 88kg while he lost the second attempt in the 92kg but won the third attempt in the 92kg lifting.

Adeleye while speaking on the feat recorded expressed joy for winning the medal and hoped it will be a start of many for Ekiti.

Technical Advisor to Governor Oyebanji on Sports Development Dr. Olusola Osetoba expressed delight that Ekiti has commenced the games on a good note for winning medal, saying she is optimistic that Ekiti will win Gold and more medals as the games progress and encouraged them to put in their best.

Ekiti contigents continue their pursuit of Gold and other medals on Monday 19th May, 2025 as they will participate in other weightlifting category, Judo, cycling, Ayo and Chess. Both badminton and Kungfu earlier postponed are also expected to hold today.

Meanwhile, Ekiti state contingent joined other states of the Federation in a colourful display at the official opening ceremony at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta Ogun State on Sunday.

The colourful opening ceremony which has in attendance dignitaries from across the country including the state Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye saw Ekiti contingent colourfully dressed and displayed to the admiration of all.

The Technical Advisor on Sports Development to Governor Oyebanji, Dr. Olusola Osetoba said the colourful display by the state Athletes is another testament of Governor Oyebanji’s determination to always make the state rank among the best even among states in the scheme of sports.

category, saying the Athletes are determined not only to participate, but to win medals at the sports festival.
