The Ekiti State Government has reassured farmers across the state of its unwavering commitment to strengthening agricultural productivity and cushioning the effects of recent challenges experienced in the sector.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Agriculture, Dr. Sikiru Olowoyo, acknowledged that the last two farming seasons were difficult for many farmers due to unfavourable weather conditions and price crises that affected farm produce.
According to him, these developments have understandably raised concerns among farmers, noting that agriculture is naturally exposed to risks and uncertainties.
He emphasized, however, that such challenges are part of the sector and should not discourage farmers from remaining committed.
Dr. Olowoyo stated that the Ekiti State Government remains focused on making food accessible, available, affordable, and sustainable for residents, describing this objective as a step in the right direction that requires the cooperation of all stakeholders.
He disclosed that during an extensive engagement with the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture earlier in the day, discussions centered on consolidating the gains achieved through various government interventions in the agricultural sector.
The Senior Special Assistant revealed that the Ekiti State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers via subsidized mechanization, subsidized farm inputs to be made available across the three senatorial districts and selected local government areas, as well as ongoing considerations,in collaboration with relevant agencies,to introduce a buy-back system at a guaranteed minimum price for farm produce.
Dr. Olowoyo appealed to farmers to prepare diligently for the new farming season, expressing optimism that better outcomes lie ahead.
Quoting a Yoruba adage, βTi esin ba dani a ma n tugun ni,β he urged farmers not to be discouraged by past or present challenges, noting that the new season may bring remarkable turnaround, in line with the economic principle of the Cobweb Theory.
He concluded by extending goodwill to farmers across the state and commended the commitment of the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), to sustaining a farmer-friendly administration.
