A non-governmental organisation, Living Hope Save Cell Foundation, has called on the Federal Government to categorise patients of the blood disorder disease as Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) and enrol them massively in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as beneficiaries.
The promoter of the NGO, Oluwabusayo Soretire, who made this call in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said that the massive enrollment of sickle cell disease patients, otherwise known as ‘warriors’, on the NHIS programme would ease the financial burden of their medication, treatment and care on parents and caretakers..
Soretire disclosed that, as a warrior herself, she understands the financial stress parents go through to access medication and treatment for sickle cell disease patients, hence, the appeal to the FG to mitigate the financial burden by helping in their enrollment in NHIS.
