The Zamfara police command says 39 residents of the Magamin Diddi area of Maradun LGA have been abducted after visiting a bandit camp in the Fadama Forest on Sunday for what was described as “reconciliation and peaceful engagement”.
Yazid Abubakar, police spokesperson in Zamfara, said in a statement that the district head of Magamin Diddi informed the command that the mass abduction occurred on Sunday at about 3pm.
“According to the report, a group of forty-seven (47) residents of Magamin Diddi mobilized themselves and proceeded to Fadama Forest within the Magamin Diddi axis to meet with the parents of a notorious bandit leader, identified as Jimo Smally, in an apparent effort aimed at reconciliation and peaceful engagement,” the statement reads.
“However, while the meeting was ongoing, the bandit kingpin allegedly arrived at the location with members of his gang and forcefully abducted thirty-nine (39) members of the group to an unknown destination.”
Abubakar said upon receiving the report, the command immediately launched efforts to track down the victims and ensure their safe rescue.
He added that operational assets have been deployed, while security personnel are acting on available intelligence to locate and rescue the abducted individuals.
The police spokesperson assured that every effort is being made to ensure the victims are rescued unharmed and the perpetrators are brought to justice.
